At Movable Roots, every home we build is a reflection of the people behind it. Today, we go behine the scenes with Alex Cheatham—our Chief Operating Officer, a steady hand behind the scenes, and a proud part of the family legacy that fuels everything we do.

Building on Legacy

Nearly three years ago, Alex joined the family business full-time, stepping into a leadership role that blends operational precision with personal investment. As the son of founder Michael Cheatham and the namesake behind the Atlas modular model (named after his son, Atlas), Alex doesn’t just work at Movable Roots—he helps carry its story forward.

Craft in Motion

As COO, Alex manages multiple custom builds at once—balancing timelines, team needs, client expectations, and, currently, operations between two warehouses as the team transitions to a new home base.

“Things move fast—especially when we’re juggling two warehouses and still delivering builds on schedule,” he says. “And when it comes time to place a modular home on its foundation, there’s no room for delays. Being able to adapt quickly is key.”

For Alex, the magic happens during trim out and punch out—the final phase of the build. “That’s when it all comes together. You see the craftsmanship, the planning, and the hard work of the team take shape.”

Standout Projects and Problem Solving

One of his favorite builds? The Atlas modular—a coastal-inspired home that perfectly blends functionality and style. “It’s named after my son, which definitely makes it special,” Alex shares. “But beyond that, it’s the design itself—the clean lines, the coastal elements, the livable layout. It’s one of those homes that just feels right, like it belongs by the water.”

The most challenging? The Jinkie modular—Movable Roots’ first full modular project and the largest to date. “Balancing site prep with factory construction was a new level of complexity. It taught us a lot, and we delivered something we’re proud of.”

He also enjoys working with solar power. “It still blows me away when we can run a home completely off-grid.”

Everyday Moments & Personal Touches

When asked what tool he relies on most, he laughs: “Honestly? My truck. I’m at the hardware store about 184738273 times a day.” Country music keeps the energy up, and while his must-have snack on build days is a soda—he’d prefer we don’t mention that to his wife.

If Alex were designing his own tiny home, a king-size bed would be non-negotiable. And his best advice to anyone considering a Movable Roots build? “Don’t skimp on storage. You’ll thank yourself later.”

Why He Does It

“The most rewarding part?” Alex doesn’t hesitate. “Meeting the customers. Seeing them take delivery or walk into their new home for the first time—that’s what this is all about.”

For Alex, it’s not just about building homes. It’s about building trust, building with intention, and building a legacy—one that’s grounded in family and carried forward by craftsmanship.
